How is this game different than a traditional mafia game?

Typically a game of mafia requires 5 or more people to play (although is more fun with more people) and requires one of those people to be the narrator (and miss out on game play).  Using this website, you can play with as few as 4 people, and there is no need for a narrator.  Also, we’ve enabled “decoy” cards and an “innocents can hide” function that make the game more challenging and fun, especially when there are fewer players.

Objective of the game

If you are mafia, the objective of the game is to kill all the non-mafia players before they vote you out and kill you.

If you are not mafia, the objective of the game is to figure out who the mafia are and kill them by voting them out before they kill you and everyone else.

Setup

Click play on the main page.  One player should create a room by entering:

• Their name
• The number of cards each player will have
• How many mafia, detectives, and doctors will be in the game
• If innocents can hide or not

The click “create.”  You will be given a room code.

Other players should enter their name and the room code provided to the player that created the room.

How to play

You will be assigned one of the following roles:

• Mafia - Kill other players during the night and try to convince other players that someone else is the mafia.
• Doctor - Can save one person/card (including themself or another person) during the night.  The person/card the doctor saves in a given night cannot be killed by the mafia that night.
• Detective - Can determine the identity of one person/card each night.  Can use their power to persuade the group as to who to vote for.
• Innocent - No special abilities.  Innocents attempt to figure out who the mafia is/are through discussion, accusing, and seeing who is acting suspicious.

• Note, if the “innocents can hide” function is enabled, you can pick a card from another player to hide from.  If the card you pick is mafia and tries to shoot you during the night, they will miss and you will not be killed.

Playing with multiple cards/person:  If you are playing with multiple cards/person, each card will display as a role; however, your true role will be highlighted in blue.  The other cards are decoys.  Decoy cards can be killed by mafia, voted out, or investigated by the detective; however, you will not be playing the role displayed on any decoy cards you have and will only be truly killed when either the mafia kills or the group votes out the card that has your true role.

• Example: You have 3 cards, mafia, doctor, and innocent.  Mafia is highlighted in blue and is the role you will play.  You will not be able to use the doctor abilities or the innocent hiding function. If your doctor or innocent cards are killed, you can continue game play, but will not be able to continue playing if your mafia card is killed.

At the start of the game, you will be able to see all of your cards, what role you are playing, and what the roles of your decoy cards are.  If you have a mafia card and are playing with multiple mafia, you will also be able to see which other cards are mafia.

During the game there are “days” and “nights.”  During each night:

• Each player that is mafia gets to select one card to kill. 
• The detective selects one card to investigate.  
• The doctor gets to save one card. That card cannot be killed.
• Innocents can hide from one card (if the “innocents can hide” function is enabled).  If this  function is not enabled, they will need to select “skip”.????

During the day, everyone wakes up to find out who (if anyone) has been killed.  The detective will also see the identity of the card they investigated.  If the mafia selected the same card that the doctor saved or if an innocent hid from the mafia card that tried to kill them, the mafia will “miss” and not end up killing their intended victim.  The group can then discuss what happened, make accusations, and try to figure out who is mafia.  Mafia can try to convince others that someone else is mafia.

Everyone then gets to vote for one card to kill.  Doctors, detectives, and innocents should vote for the card they think is mafia.  Mafia should vote for others.  After the votes are in, the card with the most votes will be killed.  If there is a tie, a card will be killed at random from amongst those that tied for the most votes.

Important:  The dead cannot speak.  If your true card gets killed and you see a line through your name, you are out of the game and should no longer to discuss the game with other players, reveal which you role you had, or tell/hint at which roles others have.

Winning the game

The mafia win if they kill all the others in the game and at least one mafia is the last player alive.

The townspeople win if all the mafia are voted out and killed during the game.
